SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Massachusetts Annual Independent Living Education Day at the State House
DESCRIPTION:With an abundance of caution over the coronavirus\, MASILC has decided to cancel the Independent Living Education Day\, scheduled to take place March 12\, 2020 at the State House in Boston. Each year this day brings together close to 200 people with disabilities and allies to share the importance of the Independent Living movement and highlight the barriers that still exist. Cancelling this event was a difficult decision. \nPlease take this opportunity to reach out to your legislators at the State House or in their district offices. You can reach out to your Independent Living Center for educational materials to share with legislators. \nhttps://malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator \n\nMembers of the Statewide Independent Living Council\,  staff and consumers of the ten Independent Living Centers from across the Commonwealth will be at the State House as we discuss the valuable services provided to the citizens of our Commonwealth by Massachusetts Independent Living Centers.  \nThe Commonwealth’s 10 Independent Living Centers assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their self-defined goals through peer counseling\, skills training\, advocacy\, information and referral and transitions.  Centers serve as a strong consumer voice on a wide range of national\, state and local issues.  They work to assure physical and programmatic access to housing\, employment\, transportation\, recreational facilities\, and health and social services.  They have been instrumental in the development of personal care services\, and have worked to reduce physical barriers in numerous Massachusetts communities. \nJoin us as the disability community comes together to build relationships\, meet with legislators and advocate for the funding of the independent living centers and priorities important to the disability community.\n \nRegistration: 10:00 am\, meet at Grand Staircase\nSpeakers: 11:00 am\nLunch: 12 pm (a bagged lunch will be provided to all participants) \nBCIL Legislative Visits: 1-3 pm \n2020 Priorities (to be mentioned during the legislative visits): \n\nAlign MA AAB regulations with the ADA\nSupport Independent Living Centers\nServices and supports for Youth\nAccess to Housing for People with Disabilities\nAccess to Assistive Technology and Durable Medical Equipment\nAccess to Health Care \n\nIf you are interested\, please fill out this Google Form to get registered. Please set up an appointment with your legislators\, and encourage them to come out and listen to the speakers. Click here to find your legislator.  \nBCIL Community Organizer Eviva Kahne will be managing logistics for the morning and legislative visits for the afternoon. She will be in touch with you after you register. Please also contact her at ekahne@bostoncil.org or 617-338-6665 x 270 with any questions. \n\nFor more information or to request or confirm communication access or other accommodations\, please email info@masilc.org.  This event is supported by the SILC Public Education and Information Committee and the Commonwealth’s 10 Independent Living Centers.

SUMMARY:Save the AAB! Action
DESCRIPTION:What: Save the AAB! Action 11-01 3-6 pm \nWhen: 3-6 pm. We will gather at the 4th floor café at 2:45 pm \nWhere: Governor’s Office\, State House \nEvent Info/About Section: Last week we showed up at Governor Baker’s office to demand the AAB keep its independence to ensure architectural accessibility in MA. We told him we’d be back if he wasn’t willing to meet with us. Please join us! \nThe AAB is an independent authority ensuring access to housing\, businesses\, schools and stores for people with disabilities. For 50 years\, the AAB’s executive director was chosen by the board; however\, the Baker administration has given the hiring power to the Department of Professional Licensure (DPL). This undercuts the independence\, integrity and efficacy of the board to uphold the civil rights of people with disabilities. The DPL has unilaterally changed the job description of the director to require that it report only to their department. This undermines the AAB’s ability to enforce our civil rights. \nWe have two demands for the governor:\n1.) That the AAB be allowed to hire their new director\n2.) That the job description require the AAB director to report to the board of the AAB and NOT to DPL \nIf you are able to come:\n• We will gather at the 4th floor café of the State House at 2:45 p.m.\nIf you can’t attend the whole rally:\n• Come for the beginning or the end. We are coordinating a second group of protesters to arrive at 4:30 p.m. \nIf you are unable to come:\n• Please call or email the constituent services office of Governor Baker’s office and demand that he save the AAB!!\n• Phone: 617-725-4005\n• Email Form: https://www.mass.gov/forms/email-the-governors-office \nFor questions contact BCIL Community Organizers Shaya French at 617-338-6665 x 209 / sfrench@bostoncil.org or Eviva Kahne at 617-338-6665 x 303 / ekahne@bostoncil.org
