BCIL, a non-profit, in downtown Boston is seeking an individual who identifies as a person with a disability who has excellent customer services skills, communication and listening skills.
Position Summary: Provides peer mentoring, skills training, advocacy, information & referral, and other supportive services to people with disabilities through BCIL’s Direct Services Department. The Disability Peer Advocate supports individuals with disabilities in developing advocacy skills to support them in increasing their independence and attaining independent living goals. This position will have the opportunity to participate in systematic advocacy issues as prioritized by their supervisor. The Disability Peer Advocate reports to Director of Services and will work primarily with adult consumers.
- Works with consumers to help them assess their personal independent living needs and develop independent living service plans (ILSPs).
- Advocates for the rights and integration of individuals with disabilities. Helps individual and groups develop advocacy skills in various situations, such as health care access, housing, etc.
- Provides skills training, peer mentoring, advocacy, and information & referral as necessary to consumers individually or in groups.
- Coordinates services with other agencies and BCIL staff members.
- Documents work clearly and in a timely manner through narrative in BCIL data system and other reporting forms.
- Makes arrangements to meet with and travel to consumers’ homes, service agencies, or other mutually agreed upon locations for consumer meetings.
- Engages in community outreach as necessary to help promote agency goals.
- Other related duties as may be assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in a human services field and/or relevant independent living experience.
- Member of the population to be served or extensive experience working in an independent living setting.
- Bi-lingual skills in languages used by consumers a strong plus.
- Creativity and the ability to initiate and carry out projects.
- Ability to model leadership, set clear, professional boundaries and work as part of a team in all settings when representing the agency.
- Ability to work with a variety of people and assist with agency collaborations.
- Strong oral, written, listening, and time-management skills.
- Ability to travel throughout BCIL service area.
- Commitment to independent living philosophy is essential.
- 2 weeks vacation (increases with length of service)

75% of Health and dental paid by the organization
Short term disability, long term disability and life insurance (100% paid by the organization)
Full Time 40 hours per week
Salary: $32,000 Annually
