SUMMARY:Youth Workshop - Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:The Youth Team at BCIL is excited to offer daily workshops on different topics throughout the month of May. Topics cover a range of independent living skills and skills needed to think about different kinds of employment\, and how to get and keep a job. These daily workshops are for youth with disabilities ages 14-22. \nPlease email to register\, and then we will provide the link and password for the Zoom meeting: Mary-Kate Wells at bcilyouthservices@bostoncil.org \nThe workshops include: \nInformational Interviews: Meet people who are working in different careers. In these informational interviews\, students will have time to develop questions they want to ask the person in the specific career. The Interviewee will then join for Q &A. Bring some questions! \n\n5/4- Ask a Small business owner- Learn about owning a business.\n5/18- Ask a restaurant manager and waitress – Learn about working in a restaurant from a manager and waitress.\n\n5/4- Time Management: Managing our time is an important skill as we think about leaving high school. Join us as we review different strategies to help us manage time. Students will leave with some ideas to try. \n5/5- Leaving High School with a certificate: Are you leaving High School with a certificate of completion? In this workshop\, student will be given the opportunity to explore what leaving high school with a certificate of completion means and different post-secondary options. \n5/6- Exploring a Gap Year: Gap years\, often a year taken between high school and college\, can be a great opportunity for personal growth. In this workshop we’ll explore some gap year programs\, as well as discuss different options for structuring one’s time and learning during a gap year. \n5/6- Personal Finance: Credit: What is credit and why should I care? In this workshop we will provide a basic overview of credit\, why it is important\, and identify resources for future learning and exploration. If you’ve hoped to rent an apartment\, or take out a car loan\, this is a good place to start! \n5/8- Self-care group: Join us to connect\, share ideas about how to take care of ourselves during stress and difficulty. \n5/11- Meal Planning: In this workshop we will discuss meal planning- how to eat well on a budget by planning ahead. Youth will leave with some tips and techniques\, as well as a worksheet to plan lunches for a week. \n5/12- Disability Disclosure and Accommodations at work: Have you ever wondered if you should disclose your disability at work? Do you need accommodations to support you at work? During this workshop\, we will talk about disability at work and your rights and responsibilities. \n5/13- Exploring the College Application Process: Interested in attending college? In this workshop we will explore the college application process. Students will leave with an idea of key dates. \n5/15- Staying Connected while Social Distancing: In this workshop we will explore how we stay connected to friends\, family\, and our larger communities while we are staying at home. \n5/18- Decision Making: In this workshop we will discuss some ways to make responsible decisions for ourselves. \n5/19- Trades Pathways- Are you interested in learning about Trades such as carpentry\, plumbing\, electricity\, cosmetology? In this workshop\, we will explore different trades and trade programs. \n5/20- Student Life\, or Making Friends After High School: In this workshop we’ll explore ways to make friends in college and making friends outside of high school. \n5/20- Personal Finance: Reading a Paystub: Why does money get taken out of my paycheck? What are taxes and why do they matter? Join us as we deepen our knowledge of personal finance. \n5/22- Discussion on online dating and safety: In recent years\, online dating has become more and more common. In this workshop we will explore safety tips for online dating. \n5/26- Setting goals- What are your future goals? Students will have an opportunity to identify a short-term and long-term goal using the SMART goal method. \nJob Skills Series (Thursdays)- In this interactive job skills series\, each week students will have the opportunity to learn and practice job skills such as communication\, answering interview questions\, problem solving\, and conducting a job search. SUMMARY:Virtual Social Groups @ BCIL
DESCRIPTION:To address social isolation among consumers\, especially during social distancing rules due to the covid-19 virus\, we will be hosting virtual social groups for consumers of BCIL. These groups will further the Independent Living goals of participating in social and recreational activities\, increasing social contacts\, and improving communication for consumers by bringing them together remotely. This will also serve to strengthen the disability community and empower consumers by helping be part of that community. \nWe will offer 3 groups: Art Group\, Games Group\, and Pet Appreciation Group \nThese groups will rotate on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons from 2-4pm. \n\nArt Group 4/14/2020\, 4/23/2020\n\nTheme: Growth – “Planting the Seeds” \nUsing either sketch.io combined with screen share\, or materials from home\, consumers are invited to make art surrounding this theme. \n\nGames Group 4/16/2020\, 4/28/2020\n\n                Game: “Drawful 2” \nDrawful 2 is a game that can be played using one PC and up to 8 separate devices (such as smart phones\, tablets\, or even PCs). Game play consists of drawing prompts anonymously using your smartphone\, which the group tries to \nguess the meaning of (sort of like Pictionary). Everyone votes on which description is best and points are given out based on which are the most popular. \nOne staff member shares the game on screen\, and up to 7 others join using their smartphone. Any additional participants can join the ‘audience’ from their phones as well. \n\nPet Appreciation Group 4/21/2020\, 4/30/2020\n\nConsumers are invited to share pictures of their pets\, as well as feature their pets on camera. \nTo register: contact Amanda at abernard@bostoncil.org or call 978-893-8099

DESCRIPTION:The Youth Team at BCIL is excited to offer daily workshops on different topics throughout the month of April. Topics cover a range of independent living skills and skills needed to think about different kinds of employment\, and how to get and keep a job. These daily workshops are for youth with disabilities ages 14-22. \nThe workshops include: \nCooking with Dan and Kaitlyn: Join us every Monday as we explore cooking basics\, from cleanliness and safety\, to easy preparation techniques. \nWhat? Why? Work: Introduction into Employment- Explore the questions “What is Work?” And “Why we Work?” \nDifferences Between High School and College: Bring your questions about college! In this workshop we will explore some common differences between high school and college. Students will have the opportunity to identify a growth area. \nResume Building: Do you have a resume? In this workshop\, we will cover the purpose of a resume\, information to include on a resume\, and types of resumes. \nHousing Basics: Would you like to have your own apartment someday? In this workshop\, we will cover basics of applying for housing and being a good renter. \nWhat am I interested in? Exploring interests and skills: In this workshop\, we will explore our interests and skills. Students will have the opportunities to identify potential career interests. \nExploring the Cost of College: Join us as we explore the cost of college and how to apply for scholarships. \nChoosing a college and the college experience: Join us as we explore how to choose a college that will provide the best experience for us. We will also talk a bit about living at home versus living on campus\, and some aspects of the college experience. \nInterview Skills: Nervous about interviewing? Join us to learn how to prepare for an interview and how to answer common interview questions. \nDisability History Jeopardy: What do you know about disability history? Join us for a fun opportunity to learn and test your knowledge! \nExploring Careers: In this workshop\, we will cover career options. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different careers. \nPersonal Finance: Explore some basic personal finance topics. Students will have the opportunity to identify areas for further learning and growth. \nSocial Media and Employment: In this workshop\, we will explore the role of social media in employment and how to use social media to present ourselves to prospective employers. \nHousing Basics 2: In this workshop we will talk about affordable housing wait lists\, and support youth in planning a housing search. \nExploring Career Pathways: How do I become…?
