SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Massachusetts Annual Independent Living Education Day at the State House
DESCRIPTION:With an abundance of caution over the coronavirus\, MASILC has decided to cancel the Independent Living Education Day\, scheduled to take place March 12\, 2020 at the State House in Boston. Each year this day brings together close to 200 people with disabilities and allies to share the importance of the Independent Living movement and highlight the barriers that still exist. Cancelling this event was a difficult decision. \nPlease take this opportunity to reach out to your legislators at the State House or in their district offices. You can reach out to your Independent Living Center for educational materials to share with legislators. \nhttps://malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator \n\nMembers of the Statewide Independent Living Council\,  staff and consumers of the ten Independent Living Centers from across the Commonwealth will be at the State House as we discuss the valuable services provided to the citizens of our Commonwealth by Massachusetts Independent Living Centers.  \nThe Commonwealth’s 10 Independent Living Centers assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their self-defined goals through peer counseling\, skills training\, advocacy\, information and referral and transitions.  Centers serve as a strong consumer voice on a wide range of national\, state and local issues.  They work to assure physical and programmatic access to housing\, employment\, transportation\, recreational facilities\, and health and social services.  They have been instrumental in the development of personal care services\, and have worked to reduce physical barriers in numerous Massachusetts communities. \nJoin us as the disability community comes together to build relationships\, meet with legislators and advocate for the funding of the independent living centers and priorities important to the disability community.\n \nRegistration: 10:00 am\, meet at Grand Staircase\nSpeakers: 11:00 am\nLunch: 12 pm (a bagged lunch will be provided to all participants) \nBCIL Legislative Visits: 1-3 pm \n2020 Priorities (to be mentioned during the legislative visits): \n\nAlign MA AAB regulations with the ADA\nSupport Independent Living Centers\nServices and supports for Youth\nAccess to Housing for People with Disabilities\nAccess to Assistive Technology and Durable Medical Equipment\nAccess to Health Care \n\nIf you are interested\, please fill out this Google Form to get registered. Please set up an appointment with your legislators\, and encourage them to come out and listen to the speakers. Click here to find your legislator.  \nBCIL Community Organizer Eviva Kahne will be managing logistics for the morning and legislative visits for the afternoon. She will be in touch with you after you register. Please also contact her at ekahne@bostoncil.org or 617-338-6665 x 270 with any questions. \n\nFor more information or to request or confirm communication access or other accommodations\, please email info@masilc.org.  This event is supported by the SILC Public Education and Information Committee and the Commonwealth’s 10 Independent Living Centers.
