Youth Workshop – Choosing a College and the College Experience

April 29, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Youth Team at BCIL is excited to offer daily workshops on different topics throughout the month of April. Topics cover a range of independent living skills and skills needed to think about different kinds of employment, and how to get and keep a job. These daily workshops are for youth with disabilities ages 14-22.

The workshops include:

Cooking with Dan and Kaitlyn: Join us every Monday as we explore cooking basics, from cleanliness and safety, to easy preparation techniques.

What? Why? Work: Introduction into Employment- Explore the questions “What is Work?” And “Why we Work?”

Differences Between High School and College: Bring your questions about college! In this workshop we will explore some common differences between high school and college. Students will have the opportunity to identify a growth area.

Resume Building: Do you have a resume? In this workshop, we will cover the purpose of a resume, information to include on a resume, and types of resumes.

Housing Basics: Would you like to have your own apartment someday? In this workshop, we will cover basics of applying for housing and being a good renter.

What am I interested in? Exploring interests and skills: In this workshop, we will explore our interests and skills. Students will have the opportunities to identify potential career interests.

Exploring the Cost of College: Join us as we explore the cost of college and how to apply for scholarships.

Choosing a college and the college experience: Join us as we explore how to choose a college that will provide the best experience for us. We will also talk a bit about living at home versus living on campus, and some aspects of the college experience.

Interview Skills: Nervous about interviewing? Join us to learn how to prepare for an interview and how to answer common interview questions.

Disability History Jeopardy: What do you know about disability history? Join us for a fun opportunity to learn and test your knowledge!

Exploring Careers: In this workshop, we will cover career options. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different careers.

Personal Finance: Explore some basic personal finance topics. Students will have the opportunity to identify areas for further learning and growth.

Social Media and Employment: In this workshop, we will explore the role of social media in employment and how to use social media to present ourselves to prospective employers.

Housing Basics 2: In this workshop we will talk about affordable housing wait lists, and support youth in planning a housing search.

Exploring Career Pathways: How do I become…? In this workshop, we will identify the pathways to different careers.

Finding and Applying for Jobs: Are you looking for a job? In this workshop, we will cover the job search and application process.
