Supported Decision Making Workshop
Presented by Emily Berheide, M.Ed., OTR/L
Hosted by BCIL Youth Services
Wednesday, April 13th
6:00-7:00 pm via Zoom, Reserved for families and people with disabilities
As most adults know, the transition to adulthood is a process that goes on for many years, not something that magically happens when someone turns 18. We learn best through practice (including sometimes making mistakes) and from talking to other trusted people in our lives who may be more knowledgeable on certain topics than we are.
Supported Decision-Making is an approach that allows families to work together to create a plan that will allow the young person to gain skills and confidence in decision-making, while relying on trusted “experts” for guidance and support along the way. It is also an alternative to guardianship that allows youth to keep their rights while still having support.
This interactive workshop is an opportunity for teens, their parents, and the professionals who support them to ask questions, share experiences, and learn about Supported Decision-Making. This session will be led by Emily Berheide, M.Ed., OTR/L who is a transition consultant working for the Center for Public Representation to provide information about Supported Decision-Making to families. Please check out this website to learn more about Supported Decision-Making: http://supporteddecisions.org.
Please email Mary-Kate Wells, mkwells@bostoncil.org , to register, receive the Zoom link, request accommodations, or request an interpreter.
